When Installing Backwater Valves:

Backwater valves are installed in order to prevent sewage and other waste water from flowing back into a home or building. Here are the general steps for installing a backwater valve:

  1. Locate the sewer line. The backwater valve should be installed on the main sewer line, as close to the home or building as possible.
  2. Cut the sewer line. Using a pipe cutter, carefully cut the sewer line to create an opening for the valve.
  3. Install the backwater valve. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly install the valve in the opening in the sewer line.
  4. Test the valve. Turn on the water supply and test the valve to ensure that it is functioning properly.
  5. Connect the piping. Attach the necessary piping to the valve according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Close up the valve. Once the valve is installed and tested, cover it with a protective casing to keep it safe from debris and other potential damage.

Folks, if you're finding yourself in a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) plumbing situation and make a mistake, don't despair. Don't stress yourself out like I had done =0)) And actually it's not even funny! I thought to myself: "That's it! The faucet and sink would be out of service for days now!" I was driving myself bananas! Call your plumber or a reputable plumbing shop like Preferred Plumbing. At least, to diagnose the issue properly. Nowadays, things can be rectified a lot easier and quicker than you'd think... I've just had my P-trap pipes repaired under the bathroom sink (in a condo) — with Preferred Plumbing. What an admirable team there: from the Main office intake (Maggie) all the way to the owner Raphie himself! ...with Daniel T. being the initial consultant, Dominic Z. the star Tech who fixed it all for me and Josh the Assistant with a friendly beard on the team. The thing which was giving me grief was the P-trap pipe portion that had been 'bloody' soldered to the the main pipe from the building (coming from behind the wall)! Obviously, the kind of thing you don't usually have the tools for as an average Joe. How I got to that point? Don't ask, ok? Just don't ask. I'd already broken an edge of that P-trap portion that's attached to the main pipe from the building (by trying to tighten it up a notch, seeing that it was still leaking). In short, I needed an emergency repair to replace the entire P-trap pipe as a result. My mind was racing with all sorts of scenarios: what if the repair is too complex and unaffordable, what if it takes days to fix — because of some permit, property management involvement or the tool required? But guess what... I called up the shop and found it wasn't as scary as the situation first presented itself. The entire team Preferred Plumbing Solutions worked like special ops: they had all the tools, were ready to rock, on time and put all the options on the table upfront. No surprises. No delays. Needless to say, I'm so relieved it's done. Phew! Good job, team! Appreciate your coming to help me out on the same day.

To start they were to be my house on a Wednesday Feb 1 2023 at 9:00am and 5 minutes to 9:00 the person from Preferred calls me on my cell to say they are running a few minutes late and apologized. The person said he would be happy to bring me a coffee. Who does that - a thoughtful gesture. They arrived at 9:05 am and promptly assessed what needed to be done to fix a broken kitchen faucet. They gave me 3 options at 3 price points and I choose one. The work was done quickly, promptly and on budget - 3 out of 3. The plumbing technicians were courteous, polite and efficient - again, 3 out of 3. Can't say enough positive things about the people and this company. Also my front door lock was loose and one of the technicians had a screwdriver and decided on his own volition to tighten the screws and now the door lock works much better. They will be the first plumbing company I call when and if I have any other plumbing issues in my house. This is a legit review. Andrew

Raphie was incredibly professional and kind. I've never had a better experience with a service company of any kind. I would absolutely call Preferred Plumbing Solutions again if I encounter future problems and I highly recommend them. The attention to detail, thoroughness and above and beyond service was refreshing. Raphie even cleaned up after and cleared all the garbage for me, which no one has ever done. The details matter and say a lot about the way any business genuinely cares for it's customers. Thanks Raphie!

The service amazing. Punctual. Professional. Fixed the problem. At this sensitive time of covid 19. I was asked if I was comfortable with their covid 19 precautions which I was because I saw how careful they were. Gloves masks protective footwear coverings as well as sensitized and wipes. They left my home sanitized clean and soled my problem. Thank you preferred plumbing

Preferred plumbing went above and beyond to explain their services and help with our master bathroom. Even after the service is done, they offered to call my insurance to support my case for draining issues needing to be fixed. I’m so impressed with their customer service, even as a follow up once the service was paid and completed!

As always, I could rely on Preferred Plumbing to arrive exactly when they said they would. The service guy was so pleasant and accommodating. He explained everything to me clearly and patiently before beginning the repairs, and made sure I was ok with what needed to be done. I’m always amazed at how clean my bathroom is after these service guys leave. Everything is done with such courtesy and respect for the home owner. It was a positive experience from beginning to end. And of course the work is always done to perfection with such attention to detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Backwater Valve?

When there’s a heavy rainfall, there’s a great risk of basements getting overfilled and homeowners having to deal with a water backup issue. Worse, homeowners can also deal with dirty raw sewage parading into their basements, causing further unimaginable damage. Lucky there’s a way to prevent this and that is through installing a backwater valve.

How Does The Backwater Valve Work?

A backwater valve is a plumbing device that helps to prevent wastewater from backing up into a home. The valve works by blocking the flow of water when it reaches a certain level, preventing contaminated water from entering your home’s plumbing system. It’s an important measure for both safety and prevention of costly damage from backed-up sewage. It can be manually operated or it may be connected to a float switch that activates the valve when water levels reach a certain point. When properly installed, these valves will keep backed-up water out of your home and ensure its plumbing stays free of contamination due to sewage backups.

What is a water softener?

A piece of equipment that replaces the calcium and magnesium as well as most minerals through ionic exchange from your water supply system.

Why are my faucets stiff and so difficult to operate?

Stiff faucets are caused by worn internal components such as cartridges. This is due to the hardness of the water.

What is the difference between hard and soft water?

Here at Preferred Plumbing Solutions Inc., one of the most common questions we receive is about the differences between hard and soft water. Hard water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can cause scale to build up in pipes and appliances over time. Soft water on the other hand, is free of those minerals, allowing soap to lather better and providing a gentler touch. In addition, soft water can assist with reducing soap scum in sinks and showers while helping reverse some of the damage caused by hard water. Ultimately, the key difference between hard and soft water has to do with those mineral levels and their effects on plumbing systems.

How often should I have my drains cleaned?

Preferred Plumbing Solutions Inc. recommends that you have your drains cleaned every two years to ensure optimal performance of the system and to prevent any clogs from building up. Scheduling regular drain cleaning appointments is a great proactive measure to maintain your plumbing and extend the life of your system. Professional maintenance and care can help you avoid expensive backups or repairs down the road!
